What is Reddit and How to Use it in Best Way? Reddit guide for Beginners

Reddit was launched in 2005 by two college graduates with an idea to launch a website with an online community that decided what was worth making the news by letting them posts whatever they wanted and only the best was to rise to the top and be seen on “the front page of internet” which is a name self-claimed by Reddit.

For a normal user who browses the internet, when they open the site at first, the site looks overwhelming with the design and all the terms that users also called as “Redditor” seem to be using, to make it easy for you to start using Reddit like a professional, we will help you out with the basics of the site and get you ready in a jiffy

Getting Started

Like most online communities, Reddit also requires you to sign-up to be able to use all the features of the website such as voting, commenting and saving posts on the site although you can still browse everything that is on there without ever having to sign up because everything is there if you know your way around the sign up part, we do recommend you sign up as it will let you get involved with the community and allow you to comment and vote on posts.

Subreddits

After you sign up for an account, the website has a different topic that has been particularized and named specifically, they are called subreddits. The website has organized all different kinds of things into message boards where a user can browse all things about a specific topic at a single place.

We suggest that once you start browsing through subreddits, there are thousands of them ranging from things like r/shower thoughts, r/tifu (Today I fucked up) to things like r/pics and r/news, if you have ever thought of anything that you think nobody else has ever thought of, I bet you that its already there on Reddit, all you have to do is type the correct words in the search box and you might just find it and someone you can relate with on that topic. Above I used the “r/”, which is a way to mention subreddits on the site, and all subreddit names are supposed, to begin with, that.

Also to remind you can post just about anything on the website even if it is NSFW(Not Safe for Work) content but you have to abide by the rules of each subreddit, there are moderators on each who manage the content and spam that users post on the site and they are pretty strict about it. We recommend that you read the rules of each subreddit before posting anything on it. You can subscribe to a subreddit that you like and this way you will see more content from that specific subreddit on your page to make your experience richer.

Posts, Comments and Voting

You can post on different subreddits as you please while abiding by the posting guidelines of the subreddit, three main types of posts that you can do is sharing a link, posting an image or posting a video. For instance if you are on r/news then anything you post must strictly be news and not something personal or a promotion for your business because everything on Reddit has its own place to beat, so before you post or ask a question, search it in the search box because there is a high chance someone had the same concern that you are having at the present time. This will help you save time and make your overall experience of the website better.

While you can post things on Reddit, most of the fun is in the comments section where you see users from all around the world sharing their thoughts on topics, although the language and jokes used by the users are a little hard to understand at first and they have deep references to things, trust me it gets better and funnier once you get a hold of it. As the website bring the best and authentic things to the top, all if that is possible through the voting which applies to both comments and posts. You can either “up-vote” something or “down-vote” depending on whether you liked it or didn’t like it respectively.

The voting provides something called “Karma” to the user in turn of the votes one gets, it is a good way to build the reputation on the website, and users can view the amount of karma you have received on your profile when they visit it.

If you think you want to see the new things first and not the top posts, don’t worry because there are options on the top of subreddits which help you organize things as “Hot”, “New”, “Gilded” and “Controversial” etc.

Reddit and Reddit Gold

One way Reddit generates revenue is through ads on the website if you choose to not see the ads you can become superuser by buying Reddit Gold. The Gold memberships allow the user customizations such as the ability to turn off ads, customize the theme and the layout to your choice, costs are 3.99$ per month or $29.99 per year.

We tried to cover as much possible on getting you started on Reddit, as you start using the website you will learn more things about it overtime and hopefully this guide has helped you learn the basic and make your experience better.
