Crypto Locker
This is one of the most dangerous viruses of all the time. It is a virus which basically encrypts the user’s hard drives and if they don’t pay a sum of money they end up losing all of their files. It was written by Bogachev a Russian Hacker in 2013 and Made its appearance’s in mid-2013.
The only way which helped user anyway after the attack was the system restore function. But it has affected many users around the globe and made their data a history.
In June 2014, Operation Tovar took down Evgeniy Bogachev, the leader of the gang of hackers behind Crypto Locker. In February, the FBI offered a cool reward of 3 million dollars for Bogachev.
ILOVEYOU
It is the name of another malware which is not a good one because of its mode of attack. The victim receives the email with an attachment ILOVEYOU. When the victim clicks the attachment to open it to see the message the virus emails its self to victims contact list and spread itself. It was written in 2000 and was a very big monster virus of his time.
ILOVEYOU was written by Two young Filipino programmers, Reonel Ramones and Onel de Guzman were named as the perps but because there were no laws against writing malware, their case was dropped and they went free. ILOVEYOU was so virulent it holds Guinness World Record.
Slammer
It is the most lethal virus on our list. The slammer basically transfers itself on to a computer over the internet and in very few minutes it replicates itself into thousands of copies. ThisComu is the mode of action of this virus. It crashed the servers which were essential to run the internet in 15 minutes straight.
Stuxnet
Stuxnet is easily the scariest virus on the list as it was built by government engineers in the US with the intention of obstructing nukes from being built in Iran. Yes, you read that right. Who needs to target email when they can gun for nukes? Stuxnet spread by a USB thumb drive and targeted software controlling a facility in Iran that held uranium. The virus was so effective it caused their centrifuges to self-destruct, setting Iran’s nuclear development back and costing a lot of money
Strom Worm
Storm Worm was a particularly vicious virus that made the rounds in 2006 with a subject line of ‘230 dead as storm batters Europe’. Intrigued, people would open the email and click on a link to the news story. Storm Worm was a Trojan horse that infected computers, sometimes turning them into zombies or bots to continue the spread of the virus and to send a huge amount of spam mail.
