Microsoft CEO Thinks The World Is A Giant Computer

Nowadays, Microsoft never misses an opportunity to talk about AI, Cloud, and IoT. These are the new pillar Satya Nadella is trying to strengthen ever since he was appointed as the Microsoft CEO. Recently, while speaking in London, Nadella said “it’s amazing to think of a world as a computer. I think that’s the right metaphor for us as we go forward.”

That isn’t surprising because you can find a piece of AI and Cloud-powered technology almost anywhere anytime.

In the case of Microsoft, the company is trying to put AI wherever they can including Windows, HoloLens, Office, etc. Also, they’re working to combine their AI and cloud efforts, new changes brought to Azure is a great example of that.

Nadella said we should take computing to the areas where large amounts of data is available, for instance, an oil factory or a retail store. Such places with tons of sensors and data will require a lot of computing. For the future, Microsoft is working to shape Azure cloud into a backbone for its different products.

If you don’t want to go far away, an average house has many sensors placed in toasters, refrigerators, grills, etc. Microsft wants to cloud connect them. But with all of the AI ambitions, principles and ethics shouldn’t be sidestepped.

“Technology developments just don’t happen. They happen because of us as humans making design choices — and those design choices need to be grounded in principles and ethics, and that’s the best way to ensure a future we all want,” Nadella said.

While quoting an example of AI risks, he said that an AI system meant to understand language has a basic flaw. It learns from a corpus of human data which itself is biased. The need is that case is to create tools that de-bias the data used for training.
